Local governments and school boards in the Northern part of the Province are confronted by specific challenges and needs that are in part related to their geographic location. In response to this, to ensure that resources and solutions were more accessible, MTE developed the NSA.

Our goal in this initiative has been to address existing and emerging issues, while at the same time minimizing the cost associated with delivering an essential service to taxing authorities in the North.

The NSA service delivery model was created with two specific objectives in mind:

  • To satisfy the obvious and ever increasing need for assessment and taxation support in Northern Ontario; and

  • To ensure that these needs, which are commonly shared by taxing authorities in the northern part of the province, can be met in a cost efficient manner.

To this end, members of the Northern Service Alliance receive:
  • Copies of all MTE communication bulletins, which are issued periodically to update clients in a concise and clear way about high priority and emerging assessment and taxation matters;

  • Sample bylaws on relevant topics, e.g. tax ratios, tax rating, charitable rebate program, vacancy applications, etc...;

  • Regularly scheduled telephone conference calls with other NSA members to discuss timely and issue specific concerns in the North;.

  • Education and training workshops offered in both the Spring and Fall;

  • One-on-one telephone/e-mail consultations on specific jurisdictional issues; and

  • Access to expert legal counsel on municipal/finance matters, as required on a cost recovery basis.
